Dell Alienware M18x

A high-end gaming laptop

Dell Alienware have once again struck gold and their M18x is the perfect case in point for that. The company seems to know exactly what gamers need the most as well as when they need it the most. They will have to pay a lot on this product, $5.552 to be precise, but at least they’ll know, from the results we got from the tests we did, that they won’t ever regret paying such a sum. We are enclosing here the review we wrote on the subject.

Backlighting effects

So far, the M18x is Alienware’s biggest notebook as far as size goes. The design stays the same if you look at the M17x, but the lid is, this time, made from aluminum black – Nebula Red is also a color possibility if you can’t stand black -, the bottom is adorned in a panel made from rubber and the deck won’t ever get engulfed in fingerprints thanks to the help of a black finish that is soft-touch. On either end of the front of this Dell Alienware M18x sit the standard backlit grilles and the vents which circle the rear of the product are quite massive. 13 pounds and 17.2″ x 12.7″ x 2.1″ sound like a lot and they are, when observing the dimensions and weight of a, say, Acer gaming laptop.Dell-Alienware-M18x

Backlighting is such a good invention and nowhere does it have a more impressive effect than on the Dell M18x. When we had a mood swing on the duration of our test, we could show that by changing the keyboard, the front grille and so on to various colors that would suit us the most and it was a very fun-filled experience.

18.4 inch WLED display

5 macro keys and a full number pad are contained with success by the keyboard of this device featured in our review. The largeness of the buttons was very welcome, but our only gripe was that they didn’t offer too much space for our fingers to rest on. The touchpad preserved its old qualities and it sported the possibility to perform multitouch gestures, but pinch-to-zoom refused to work very well.

An 18.4″ WLED screen encompassing 1920 x 1080 pixels and edge-to-edge glass is the laptop’s pride and joy, simply because games get rendered in all their splendor while making the user immerse in the action so that she or he will feel as if they were in the game itself. This feeling will be underlined by a pair of speakers capable of the best sound in the history of Dell Alienware products.

Intel Core i7-2920XM processor

Intel Core i7-2920XM 4-GHz Turbo Boost, 16GB of DDR3 memory, dual Nvidia GeForce GTX 580M GPU and two 750GB (7.200rpm) hard drives made the performance truly wonderful with some of the best gaming scoring. Even the smallest detail in a game was rendered in an excellent way. Pausing never happened, even after we turned the settings at their maximum. Booting time disappointed us: 1 minute and 15 seconds. Software is represented by something that is known as Command Center, the one tool used to modify the touchpad’s sensitivity, the backlighting’s colors and several other operations.

The battery here is weak, but all the powerful gaming notebooks tend to have such batteries: 1 hour and 50 minutes of life was all that the M18x managed to give.

Review conclusion

The new Dell Alienware M18x is a very fine gaming gadget indeed. Forget the price: if playing games is your most favorite hobby in the world, then you’ve found your ideal in the form of the product we rated here.
