Sony Vaio F Series VPC-F236FM/B
A laptop with personality
After Apple and its sensational gadgets and streak of brilliancy surrounding them, Sony is the second best manufacturer of everything from laptops to tablets and all else in between. The manufacturer has done it again, this time with the $1.459 Vaio F Series and its VPC-F236FM/B version, a high-end laptop that is a valuable opponent to the American brand in terms of exterior and software/hardware. The tests we did on this product offered the following conclusions which we’ll now share with you.
Sony is a company that does everything humanely possible and even beyond that to offer consumers their dream gadget. The new Vaio F Series VPC-F236FM/B, we are glad to report, is a jewel from start to finish. Its size is somewhere in the middle, but still bigger than past Sony laptops, so portability is not a feasible option and characteristic here. The device targets people who are into playing games and watching movies. The basic Vaio look is present on this model, too, so no surprises there. The keyboard is a very helpful one, because it has backlight which is very bright and thus very good when you want to write your homework without turning the lights on and so on. The buttons are large and the number pad is full-size, so typing on it will offer spectacular results comfort-wise. Given the size of the Vaio F Series VPC-F236FM/B, the touch pad with its crammed mouse keys is really too small for us to enjoy it and it has a plastic feel about it in a world where glass touch pads are preferred by more and more consumers.
16.4 inch display
The screen of thus laptop is a 16.4″ one and the 1.920 x 1.080-pixel resolution is what such a device needs to deliver native resolution for high definition videos, tons of brightness clarity, as well as good viewing angles from practically any place you might sit in to watch the display. Glare didn’t come and bother us during tests, not in the least.
There was a time when gadgets made by Sony had a lot of bloatware, but that’s not the case with this laptop. The couple of applications it sports are massive hits, among them several excellent audio apps to be used when recording, editing and multitracking and Remote Play for connecting to a PlayStation 3.
2.2GHz Intel Core i7 2670QM processor
The options for connectivity were another surprise when we rated the Vaio VPC-F236FM/B for this review. For one, the number of USB 3.0 ports is bigger than the number of USB 2.0 ports and then there’s a a FireWire port, something which we missed on previous laptops not necessarily made by Sony.
A 2.2GHz Intel Core i7 2670QM processor and the Nvidia GeForce 540M GPU lend large doses of strength to the device that will attract you with the speed it shows whether you’re watching a movie, playing a game or writing in Word while listening to music.
The battery was a disappointment, since we expected more than 1 hour and 50 minutes of life for the laptop after we performed a video-playback battery-drain review on it. Sony should find a way to produce battery with a longer life for this otherwise excellent laptop. The warranty period is 1 year and customer support is very professional.
The Sony Vaio F Series VPC-F236FM/B is the type of laptop that brings many happy moments to whomever owns it and the kind of device which you won’t regret buying.
