A notebook for business
If you still find laptops more interesting than tablets, there are plenty of these devices to look at and compare in order the find the one suited to your needs. Toshiba, for instance, launched a new one, the Portege R830-1DZ. According to the company, if you buy it you can enjoy both portability and power all in one single laptop that isn’t a pain to carry around. The price is unknown for now.
The black magnesium chassis with a brushed metallic finish of the Toshiba Portege R830-1DZ is a perfect example of a laptop that combines a performance oozing power with a powerful design. Though it looks small with only 316.0 mm x 227.0 mm x 18.3 mm on the front (and 26.6 mm on the rear) and feels light with just around 1.5 kg, this laptop won’t let you down if someone accidentally hits it or drops it down from a 1 m height. The best description of Portege R830-1DZ’s looks is that it’s a laptop with 100% chances of being immediately adopted by someone working in the business sector. It’s needless to say that, with the measurements and weight it possesses, this device wins big time in the category made of portable laptops.
13.3 inch display
The keyboard of the new laptop was also black, but relatively small. Buttons, though, were plenty large and, due to their surface which was flat, we could click them in an accurate way and the response was very good. We noticed that those buttons didn’t come with much travel, and yet they offered good typing speeds. Working on this review in the dark was a tough challenge, because the keyboard had no backlighting. It was a very big con in our books. To show that its owner isn’t all that bad, the trackpad definitely impressed us with its large surface and a reader for fingerprints which was located between the trackpad’s keys; with it we found a way to assure the security of our files.
A 13.3″ screen fits under the lid and its resolution packing 1.366 x 768 pixels along with non-reflective technology all proved to collaborate really well and the performance they concocted was as good as other Toshiba laptops; brightness, sharpness, colors and factors such as these made images look great and there was nothing wrong with the viewing angles. The matte finish on the screen kept reflections at a very good distance.
Matters of connectivity are well covered by some of the following: 1 HDMI (with support for the 1080p signal format), 1 US 2.0, 1 USB 3.0, dual-function eSATA and 1 Multi-Card Reader. To browse the net, the Portege R830-1DZ comes with an array of possibilities, such as 11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0 support and integrated mobile broadband just to name a few; and, to make as many happy people as possible, the laptop offers the option of using the Internet through HSDPA at speeds reaching even 14.4Mbps. The product has the ability to read and write DVDs and CDs in all the major formats with good effectiveness in tests performed for this review.
The Intel Core i7-2640M 2.80/3.50 Turbo GHz CPU is state of the art and the speed with which the laptop operates is something to behold in awe, proving once again that Toshiba is dedicated to make as many great laptops as possible. One thing that hurt our ears was the noise the fan made when it was cooling the device down. The battery was supposed to make the laptop run for 10 hours of life, but in our benchmarks it got empty after 7 hours and a half.
The Toshiba Portege R830-1DZ will make many people happy and businessmen in particular.
